Destruction
A memorial made of shards
Schloss Loosdorf was built in the Middle Ages and has lived through numerous wars over the centuries, some of whose scars are still visible today.
Its history tells of unimaginable vandalism, the culmination of which can still be seen today in the so-called “shard room”. It is a room that stands as a memorial to the senseless destruction of war.
Schloss Loosdorf reveals both the tragedy of war and the beauty that can emerge from the reconstruction that follows.
Broken Collection
Reconstruction
Restored in Japan and Vienna
The Broken Collection illustrates reconstruction in its many different facets. From elements of different cultural eras and unique state rooms to restored porcelain pieces, Schloss Loosdorf is shaped by a constant commitment to preservation.
The historic porcelain and shard collection, unique in the world, is the centrepiece of the Broken Collection. Selected Asian and European pieces have been restored and reconstructed using the latest techniques by Japanese experts in Japan and by the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
